I was going into town with Sue after our crown green bowls practice when she asked me if I would like to go a long walk with her group.

'Oh no!' I replied, 'I'd be crippled with hip and back pains the next day.

Then she spoke the six words that I now know to be magic: 'Do you eat lots of tomatoes?'

Mystified I said I generally got through a punnet of cherry or plum tomatoes a week or so and also ate a few sundried tomatoes and of course I did like ketchup but had cut down on that over the previous year as a dieting hope.

'Tomatoes give you athritis.' She said.

I'd never heard anything bad said about tomatoes but just the opposite as tomatoes were touted as the ideal food full of vitamin C with hardly any calories.

Sue said some people were susceptible to athritis-like problems from tomatoes and as she and her huband are retired from medical careers I took her seriousy and didn't get any tomatoes that day.  I didn't eat any tomato products from that day on.

I also cut out peppers and aubergines as they are the same family - losing the peppers was no hardship as I was tired of the lingerng smell after cooking them.

I hadn't noticed any change for the first few no-tomato days but by day six I realised I had slept six solid hours and had even turned over without pain!  On day seven I woke from a super sleep, threw back the duvet and sat straight up to pull my pants on!

When I saw Sue the next Tuesday I had a big smile on my face and announced myself mirculously free of pain and practically reborn.

Today is exactly 3 months since that first painfree day and I cannot believe how those awful pains just disappeared as I cut out tomatoes and peppers.

I can walk fast and far without any after pains and sleep like a top for seven or eight hours each night.

After about  8 weeks I noticed another super benefit and that was my shoes stopped nipping my feet and giving me painful callouses and corns!

I also noticed I could stand still without my ankles start stinging with pains.

It seems that the tomato-athritis causes the joints to swell and swollen toe and finger joints are obvious signs of athritis.

Sue's Six Magic Words!

Fed up of pain?   Just try cutting out all tomato products from your diet!
